Every September the same question lands in our WhatsApp inbox: "Is the new iPhone actually worth it, or is it just last year's phone in a new colour?" This year the honest answer is more interesting than usual. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max bring the biggest camera change Apple has made in years, a new 2-nanometre chip, and the largest jump in battery life an iPhone has ever had.
We have spent the last week reading every spec sheet so you don't have to. Below you will find what is genuinely new, what it means in everyday life, which model suits you, and what they cost at Gadget Craze in Kampala.
The 30-second version
- Two sizes: iPhone 18 Pro (6.3-inch screen) and iPhone 18 Pro Max (6.9-inch screen).
- The headline feature: a main camera that can physically change how much light it lets in, like the pupil of your eye. Better night photos, better portraits, more control.
- Battery: the Pro Max lasts up to 30 hours of normal use on one charge. Most people will end the day with plenty left.
- Price at Gadget Craze: iPhone 18 Pro from UGX 5,700,000, iPhone 18 Pro Max from UGX 6,750,000.
- Getting it: same-day delivery in Kampala, Entebbe, Mukono and Wakiso, and you can pay when it arrives.

What is actually new: the five changes that matter
1. A camera that breathes: variable aperture
Here is the simplest way to understand it. The aperture is the opening that lets light into the camera. On every previous iPhone it was fixed at one size. On the iPhone 18 Pro, six tiny laser-cut blades open and close it, the same way your pupil shrinks in bright sunlight and widens in a dark room.
The 48MP Fusion main camera now moves between four settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4. Wide open at ƒ/1.48 it gathers more light than any iPhone camera before it, which helps with those dim restaurant and night-time Kampala shots. Closed down to ƒ/4, more of the scene stays sharp, which is ideal for group photos where you want the back row in focus too.
For the enthusiasts: the Camera app gains proper Pro controls, with manual shutter speed, white balance, aperture and a live histogram. Cinematic mode effects can now be applied after you have filmed, at up to 60 frames per second, and Time-lapse can shoot in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. Around the main camera sit a 48MP Ultra Wide and a 48MP Telephoto with 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality zoom, plus an 18MP Center Stage selfie camera that reframes itself when more friends squeeze into the shot.
What it means for you: fewer blurry night photos, more natural portraits, and real creative control if you want it. If you only ever press the shutter button, the phone picks the right setting on its own.
2. The A20 Pro: the first 2-nanometre iPhone chip
"Nanometres" describes how small the transistors inside a chip are. Smaller transistors mean you can fit more of them in the same space and each one uses less power. Moving to 2nm is the reason this generation is both faster and longer-lasting.
Apple's numbers: a 6-core CPU with built-in Neural Accelerators, a 7-core GPU that is up to 40 percent faster than last year's A19 Pro, 50 percent more memory bandwidth, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine (32 cores in total) with double the AI processing power.
Speed on paper is one thing. Staying fast is another. Phones slow themselves down when they get hot, and a Kampala afternoon does not help. The 18 Pro models use a new vapor chamber with three times more surface area to pull heat away from the chip, and Apple says that sustains up to 40 percent more performance over long sessions compared with the iPhone 17 Pro.
What it means for you: long gaming sessions, 4K video recording and editing, and AI features that do not make the phone stutter or turn into a hand-warmer.
3. Battery life that finally stops the charger hunt
This is the change most people will feel every day. Apple calls the Pro Max's improvement the largest increase in battery life ever on an iPhone:
- iPhone 18 Pro Max: up to 30 hours of typical use, or up to 45 hours of video playback.
- iPhone 18 Pro: up to 24 hours of typical use, or up to 36 hours of video playback.
The video figures are for eSIM-only models. Versions with a physical SIM slot are rated about two hours lower. When you do need to top up, a wired charger with a 60W USB-C adapter gets you to 50 percent in about 15 minutes, and 25W MagSafe wireless charging gets you to 50 percent in about 30 minutes. On the Pro Max, five minutes on a cable gives roughly seven hours of video.
What it means for you: a full day of WhatsApp, calls, mobile money, maps and photos, with enough left over for the evening. Power cuts and long boda rides become much less stressful.
4. A smarter Dynamic Island
The Dynamic Island is the pill-shaped area at the top of the screen that shows live information such as a timer, a call or music. It has been redesigned and can now show three Live Activities at once, for example your delivery rider's progress, a football score and a running timer, without opening a single app. Face ID still lives underneath it.
5. iOS 27 and the new Siri
The 18 Pro models ship with iOS 27, which brings the next generation of Apple Intelligence. The big one is a far more conversational Siri that understands what is on your screen and your personal context, so you can ask things like "send the photos from Saturday to Grace" and have it actually work. It launches in beta, in English first, with more languages following. Photo tools also improve, including Clean Up for removing unwanted objects and new ways to reframe and extend a picture.
The smaller upgrades worth knowing
- Display: 120Hz ProMotion with up to 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness, so the screen stays readable in full sun.
- Build: aluminium unibody design with Ceramic Shield protection.
- Connectivity: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 through Apple's N1 chip, plus Emergency SOS and Find My via satellite where the service is supported.
- Colours: black, silver, glacier and an all-new burgundy. Stock varies by colour, so check the product page or ask us.
iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max: which one is for you?
| iPhone 18 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 6.3-inch | 6.9-inch |
| Weight | 211g | 249g |
| Typical use per charge | up to 24 hours | up to 30 hours |
| Cameras | Identical on both: 48MP variable-aperture Main, 48MP Ultra Wide, 48MP Telephoto, 18MP selfie | |
| Chip | A20 Pro on both | |
| Price at Gadget Craze | from UGX 5,700,000 | from UGX 6,750,000 |
Choose the Pro if you want the full camera and chip in a phone that is comfortable in one hand and slips easily into a pocket.
Choose the Pro Max if battery life is your top priority, you watch a lot of video, or you simply like a bigger screen. At 249g it is noticeably heavier, so try both in our shop if you can.
Should you upgrade?
- From an iPhone 17 Pro: only if the variable-aperture camera or the extra battery really matter to you. Your phone is still excellent.
- On a tighter budget: the iPhone 17 range is now better value than ever. See our iPhone 17 guide and prices.
- From an iPhone 15 or 16 series: this is a strong upgrade, with a noticeably better camera, much longer battery life and a far faster chip.
- From an iPhone 14 or older: the difference will feel dramatic, from the camera to how long the phone lasts.
- Coming from Android: moving your contacts, photos and WhatsApp chats is simpler than it used to be, and our team can help you set up.
Buying in Uganda: three things to check first
1. eSIM or physical SIM? We stock versions with a physical SIM slot and eSIM-only versions. eSIM-only models are usually a little cheaper and have slightly longer rated battery life, but confirm that your line supports eSIM before you choose one. If you are not sure, ask us and we will help you check.
2. Genuine and sealed. A brand-new iPhone 18 Pro should arrive in a sealed box with a serial number you can check on Apple's coverage page. Be careful with deals that look too good to be true. Our guide to red flags when buying phones in Uganda explains what to look out for.
3. Protect it from day one. A good case and screen protector cost a tiny fraction of the phone. Pick one up at the same time and we will deliver it all together.
